Bonus for such a good looking car as the Coupe. Did you follow the A470? Terrific driving roads through Wales if the traffic is light. I'm off on a road trip through Wales in March. The road from Rhayader to Llanidloes then over the top on the B road through Staylittle to Machynlleth, is beautiful. Mach to Corris is tight, but the road from Minffordd to Cross foxes is superb as theres a wall by the road up the hill to amplify your engine noise. I just had to do it twice last year Ps The Alfa average 21 mpg. Well, I was having alot of fun....

Yep Huw, A470 most of the way. I did take the Staylittle short cut though. Good B road blast. Traffic was very light as the weather way atrocious, so makes a nice change.

Good man. I never tire of the view you get when you drop down to the Wynfred Vaughan- Thomas memorial. It's breath taking. I had sensation over load because the view appeared, the Alfa was on song and the guitar solo in The Wall came on. It was too much. My brain couldn't take in all of the positives. I turned off the stereo, jumped out if the car and inhaled lung fulls of glorious air. Man, that was a good day Viewpoint pic

Heh. 4500 miles touring Norway a couple of years ago: 42mpg... That’s impressive over such a long distance. My best ever was 43mpg over 375 miles, but I was trying VERY hard. My last tank was 22.9, which is about normal for its current use. It managed 33 on a 1,000 mile round trip to LeMans and back, loaded with lots of camping kit

So we can assume we'll never see this under your username? Actually, came very close to buying a 20VT a year or so ago.... the itch is there remaining to be scratched. I just find it hard to justify due to lack of space. The point I'm making is that it achieved 36mpg without trying, so 40mpg should be achievable. Not bad for an old 2 litre with 169bhp. My first company car was an 1999 (same year as my coupe) Astra 16v 1.6 Ecotec with 99bhp. I loved it to bits... and even that only did 36mpg on average. Just means I have even more of an excuse to keep the coupe.

I do keep a rough eye on how far I go on a tank full, as Neil says, to be aware of if the car is running OK. Even with that, being able to notice a dragging caliper is not so easy until it gets quite bad! (OK it was my wife's car and I was less actively interested in that one). I don't have the energy to do the calculation all the time

I've never worked out the mpg of a car in 38 years of driving. I had a boyfriend who meticulously recorded his mileage every time he filled up and I thought he was a bit of a prat to be honest! I do that. I also write down anything done to the car in the same book so I dont have to trawl through receipts to work it all out.
