I have always wanted a 944, its defiantly a car on the list of cars to have I can definately recommend it...but like Coupe's..there are 944's and there are 944's...grab a good one and they are fantastic...buy a bad one and you will live to regret it!! My beastie is now 26 years old with a total lack of power anything (bar windows and roof)...absolute purity..a real Porsche - don't let anyone tell you otherwise..It's as clean underneath as on top...however, the lh rear wheel bearing is getting noisy....I was going to complain to Porsche...I mean only 26 years life before it gives up..pretty shoddy I'd say http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c232/jonjeffryes/Porsche/041107a.jpgShe's only covered 66k miles from new and has had the best of treatment from new....it's a real GT rather than a sportscar...only 163bhp but stump pulling torque and low weight makes up for any lack of power. The real win is the lack of weight and the steering/handling....nothing has come close...far better than the later Turbo I owned and imho a better car/drive than my 911 (3.0 SC Carrera). I've deliberately used her - 17,000 miles added over the last 3 years -lots of long trips where she is in her element....but also good today for a run to the dump with the old patio set on board...and back via the garden centre with (Mothers Day Special) a brand new patio set on board...not many coupe's are so usable! Jon That is a lovely looking car, strong colour, so many are in terrible colours, especially interior wise! I love these cars, I've driven a couple and it was the only other car I was considering when I bought my coop (s). The coop only won because of the rear seating and the fact that when I was looking, I failed to find a good enough 944 (I was looking for a good clean 3.0). Lovely car, you must be proud, car for life I'd imagine? Do feel free to post more pics!!!!! Gareth Thanks Gareth, Yes, she's taken a lot of work to get there...the colour is a customer special order - 'Saphire' a mix of silver/grey/blue/purple metallic!! sounds awful but really works. You're right...I looked at loads before buying this one - there are some real shockers out there...but the good ones are superb - remember, this car was the equivolent of £48k in our money back in 1984! (didn't get much for your money back then!!!) This car is condition 1...with black logo Porsche seats...but it's not perfect...it gets used so has picked up a few stone chips...it has a ding just above the front wheelarch (son dropped his bike against it...he just about lived to tell the tale!) and now a noisy wheel bearing! But she's the strongest 944 I've ever driven, pulls like a train and is so relaxing to drive long distance...true mark of a real GT. I've nearly sold her twice over the years (only because of the manual steering at low speed ( - broke my neck a few years back so suffer here slightly - my wife has no problems with it) the only car that's made me look to release the garage space so far is Sam's bumblebee...now that's got me thinking I'll dig out some more photo's and post the link later. regards Jon

I've always liked the Porsche 944 as it reminds me of a Ferrari. But would you say it looks better than a Coupe? Different..not better....both have outstandingly good looks imho Jon

Thanks for a massively honest and helpfully post jonjeffryes They don't sound any cheaper to run, sure is a nice classic though It's like everything semi exotic (and I include Alfas, lancias, Water Cooled front engined Porsches in that as well)there will always be a risk of a cost that is higher than say a Ford. The work on my 944 - if it had been undertaken by a garage - would not be worth the investment...parts, probably £3000 over the years....but then I know I could jump into her tomorrow and drive to germany and back without an issue - I did Gatwick / London / cornwall / Norfolk / Gatwick in a day last year...didn't miss a beat so money well spent I guess. Still a lot lot cheaper than my 928's were Jon

nice Porsche mate.
would you say its a proper headturner? It turned a few heads when I used it to take rubbish to the dump this morning ...One guy walked right around the car and said 'you know that's a Porsche?' I did have to assure him that I did realise what I was driving and even Porsche owners create a mess sometimes 'Real head turner...oh yes - all ages react to it..944's went through a period of being ignored about 10yrs ago - the porsche club didn't want to know them - as the rotters are gradually scrapped - the good ones remain - just like the coupe!

so mikey, seen anymore nice, tempting COOPS Yeah, seems to have gone off on a bit of a tangent eh? Not to worry, Porsches are nice too! I was sorely tempted, but for the time being I have decided to content myself with making incremental improvements to my current car. I know my long term interests are probably better served by getting hold of a more interesting example than by putting money into mine, but that said I wouldn't really have the facilities (ie a garage) to keep a better example in the condition it deserves. Plus its not so much the money as the time commitment to selling mine & buying another, even if I could get a part exchange deal. If it were my next door neighbour selling then maybe!

What a lovely car!!! I'm not at all jealous, and it hasn't got me thinking about selling the LE on to buy one at all!!!
