1/4 mile times?

1/4 mile times? - 15/04/2009 20:32

Just wondered if anyone has seriously raced their coupe and got 1/4 mile times, went to the easter thunderball at the pod after not going for few years and suddenly have the taste for drag racing, raced all my coupes plenty of times, not on a strip but the whole illegal racing thing is pretty pathetic so i'd like to start racing properly, gonna keep the coupe for a while but eventually i'll go for a V8 seen a few chargers and mustangs race prepped for about 12k but before i can afford that i'm gonna race my coupe but before i go nuts on it thought i'd get other peoples times and roughly what power they were running?

there was a 20vt go up the strip at santa pod when i went to the fast show last month i think it was stanard but with fmic and done 13.9 at 101mph thought that was quiet good

yes i was happy with it! its only 249.6 bhp
alot of people say they have more power than they do though.
we bought a 20vt for a mate on tuesday the seller said it was 260-280 bhp it was no where near as fast as mine i think 250 bhp with a good start will get you a 14 flat or just under in good conditions.

Must be some scensoredte drivers or crappy track as some results on that are weird cars with 200bhp less getting better times lol

Also I think the ones in Italic are estimated? But I think the calculator is quite accurate.

LOL - 1/4's are all about the launch.... smile

That was a good run.

The ones in italic writing are estimated by torque stats, i want to see if the time estimated on mine is anything like i can get on the strip.

Re: 1/4 mile times? - 18/04/2009 09:41

defo a great time for a fwd car its so difficult to get the start right with 250 bhp with 300 must be almost impossible to get it right every time.
especially in a coupe, i used to have a 260 bhp vr6 supercharged mk2 golf and it went so much better of the line than a coupe, they are easy to spin up or bog down because of the lag.
so great time for fwd. is it nigel i saw at totb last summer win the fwd HANDLING in a COUPE, so he must be a good driver anyway.

Hooking up off the line is the single hardest thing to do with the coupe. It takes a a certain 'nack' and a bit of practive to get a feel for what's happening with the power delivery.

so can someone describe to me how to get the best launch from my coupe?
what revs do people use for launching?
mine is about 260 bhp, so how would i get a fast launch?
do i just launch on 4000rpm and floor it, or is there a more technical way?
only for use on a dragstrip or track obviously.

I think 4k and flooring will just spin up your wheels.
i would probably say 3k maybe but all coupes depending on setup will be slightly different, trust me its harder than you think.
especially at pod the surface is so smooth you cant tell when your going to loose grip it seems harder there for some reason.

you want to be at 4-5k and ride the clutch rather than dumping it to dial out the wheelspin. It becomes harder the bigger the turbo on the car is.

yeah as suba said alot of revs and dont floor the throttle is a good way to do it in a coupe.
my best start was when i feathered the loud pedal, BUT its so hard to stop u nailing the throttle when you see the 4x4 in the next lane get a jump on you.
