2x +400 bhp - 11/06/2008 17:04

Hi,

We were today once again having our Coupes tested \:\) .
Small improvement in my case: 410 bhp / 375 lb-ft.

But my friend made much better improvement in power:
445 bhp/ 6800 rpm, this with GT3071R (0.86).
His torque was "only" 347 lb-ft \:\) .

We took a video of the runs, in video there is Apexi AVC-R as well as Innovate LM-1 wideband lambda to be seen. Now we can check fuelling / boost rate / power in every 100 rpm if we want.

I had huge problems with Apexi AVC-R, I don't understand it in RR, my boost dropped dramatically after 6000 rpm, even though I had duty cycle over 70% and boost set to 1.6 bar, but no. On street AVC-R works well, I can adjust what ever boost value I want and it learns it quite quickly, but why it won't do its job in RR ???
My friend had bleed valve for boost setting and AVC-R only as a display for boost value.

Both cars still with std internals \:\) , but now we have ordered forged pistons + steel conrods for the next step... \:\) .

445bhp on standard internals.. It must be the Finnish Air. ;\)

I get lower boost on a RR than on the road as well, maybe everything is a bit hotter so the turbo has a bit lower efficiency?

not as much load on the engine is probably why you get lower boost!

Could be, if your boost controller has a set duty cycle, that wouldnt happen with a PRV though as it's forced to make as much boost as it takes to open the valve. Come to think of it, I was using an EBC last time I was on the rollers, not a PRV \:\)

all on standard internals? how does that work???

It won't for long \:D Sorry couldn’t resist that one. Great results Jari. ;\)

Where is the video? \:\)

Incredible result on standard internals. 445 HP!! I have read that the standard internals can only withstand 350 HP. And you use almost 100 HP more ;\) . Where is the limit for the piston arms?
375 lb-ft=510 Nm \:D What clutch do you use?

What it next step for you? 500 hp?

Well - 350 bhp is usually where things start to get edgey! It's not an absolute rule, and there are a lot of variables to take into consideration rather than just the torque and the BHP.

Hi,

Yes, Finnish air was in our side yesterday \:\) , we had some +15 degC temperature while having the RR runs.

What comes to blow the engine up Suba has it right, there are plenty of different things which can cause engine blow up in much lower power level. I think, for example from two of us, I'm closer to blow my engine up becasue of higher boost and higher torque ratings in use. Also my friend is using all together 4 extra injectors depending on the boost, yesterday two of them were in use.

I spoke with the tuner and he confirmed that while making RR run, there is no load in rollers and that might affect to the Apexi settings. He told also that he will get a new updated program to his RR, which allows him to use also load during the session. This load possibility is already in use, when he just adjust for example Motec etc. systems, but can't be used when measuring the power.

One notification of the fixed intake cams (variator off) vs. last RR session with 408 bhp. (Old) = variator on and (new) = variator off
The power in 3500 rpm: 70 kW (old) and 95 kW (new)
in 4000 rpm: 100 kW (old) and 123 kW (new)
in 4500 rpm: 140 kW (old) and 185 kW (new)
in 5000 rpm: 220 kW (old) and 258 kW (new)

This shows quite clearly the difference between intake cam variator in use or intake cams fixed. Intake cam retarded 18 deg between 3000 - 4800 rpm.

Next step is to get steady working engine with forged internals and goal is 450 bhp. With the turbo GT3071R it is not an issue, because my friend had that 445 bhp with raising power curve, it didn't turn down in any point.
But because of the bleed valve his curve is some 500 rpm later than mine.

so are you saying that simply disconnecting the variator is giving you a significant power increase, or have you made further adjustments to cope with no variator

Hi Nigel,

Yes to both your questions.
Even with OE turbo + OE cam settings you can notice clear midrange difference.
The bigger the turbo is the more you can gain on it.

My cam settings are no longer as they are in OE car, the cam angle is in my car now set to higher power, which mean angle value some 110 - 112 degrees. OE has some 106 or something like that.

Hmmm I can see me testing this on the rollers one night... \:D

Amazing results. Very well done Jari \:\)

How can the cam variator off give any increased power results!? (Especially on standard cam setup)

i guess removing it will also give a warning light, is it possible to put some resistor to trick the ecu to believe it is still connected? if so what value? \:D

If you just disconnect the plug to the variator it doesn't flag a fault, but if you take the relay out oit might bring the light on.
I tried disconnecting mine, my spool up was around 700rpm worse and very flat under 3500 rpm, and then the turbo came in i didn't think it felt much faster but it did have more go between 3500 rpm to 4500 rpm.
