Standard 20vt still quick today? - 11/04/2011 13:44
A recent thread on here a guy was asking if his flea mapped coupe could keep up with a focus ST in a straight line and in another thread a guy mentioned that he refused to believe slightly tuned coupes would be able to beat modern day hot hatches such as a astra vxr due to gear ratio's (his words)
Now check this out he says its his best run of the day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFsd0SFqGagI had a few years back an almost std 5 speed (long gear ratio lol) full fat 20vt with only a gtec chip run a 13.9 not even an exhaust.
So i think a bog std coupe is still clinging on to the coat tales of the modern HOT not warm hatches.

i didn't say i refused to believe that a coupe 20vt could beat modern day hot hatches I said i refused to believe that an almost standard coupe 20vt would kick a modern day hot hatch's ass, the implication that it would 'kick it's ass' meaning that the coupe would beat them by a long way rather than being as quick or just a smidgen quicker which it might be, but it's certainly not going to 'kick any modern day hot hatch's ass' aka focus st, vauxhall vxr, megane etc
if you are going to paraphrase me please make you do so correctly

"Kick its ass" would usually refer to the difference between like a 1.2 corsa and the coupe. Not really hot hatch and standard coupe, as doug said.

standard coupe 20vt would kick a modern day hot hatch's ass,
The issue with most modern cars that i have driven is they get huge power but not for long.
The key to any drag is duration of power.
Although the coupe is somewhat underpowered nowadays on paper its easily possible to ignore the power figures and put your money on the black stuff.

Thats whats put me off buying anything else.
Most manufacturers just supply a small medium and large model these days based on a design that safety styles with no individuality.
I never look at my coupe in a car park and think it looks dated, quite the opposite in fact.

Totally agree with you there, most cars just seem to be getting uglier and uglier
due to safety regulations and economy crap. Even today, the coupe is one of the most stunning/striking cars on the road.

Nissan.... make the Cube (weirdly quirky) and the Juke (utterly hideous) and also the 370Z (
).
Back on topic, I parked the Scottie at Morrisons today to get a few provisions, and coming out of the shop there were a couple of people looking around her (thankfully in Chatham not trying to steal the wheels). They had no idea what she was, and were dead impressed when I fired her up
. I desperately tried to make an exit compatible with keeping my shopping in the carrier bags, but the dark side took over
; a bit of right foot, chatter from the dump valve, and shopping everywhere
. Certainly the quickest car in the car park......

Agree with you there. Cube - Dog ugly but quirky, Juke...horrendous except the Juke-R, that thing is just INSANE, 370z...not a patch on the 350z and certainly not as nice as a 300zx twin turbo

Re: Standard 20vt still quick today? - 30/08/2012 23:15
Oh yes the 300zx! mmmmmmmmmmm but the back end? it kind of let's it down, too much like the 80/90s american cars...
Anyone coming to the Hot rod drags at shakey, 14-16th sept?
All pre 73 cars, but what a blast and far better than santapod which is too commercial for my liking.

Surely you mean quickest car
out of the car park?
Sounds a bit similar to my lap at the NuerburgRing, with tools in the boot and various supplies, balancing my weight, crammed down into the passenger footwell, trying to drive the corners while avoiding getting rammed up the duff by the Rent-4-Race saloons hurtling up behind me. Too much excitement at times, but they didn't leave me standing.

I would say so. Although mine isnt standard if you ask a e46 m3 csl, prosche boxter s, mercedes sl350 and variouse ctr, clios and golfs then they would say yes.
