Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 28/03/2011 12:58
17th May (Tuesday) we are going to do the sprint track day!!!
Another Curborough day?
It will be in May time!!
Same fun as always and fingers crossed we get a warm day instead of the wash out like last time!!!
im hoping to see the usual suspects there...
but this is going to be open to all on the forum!
it should be the full track like last time also!
Also, this again is a possible...
who would be up for a BBQ at the track (If we are allowed)
saves going to the pub's ect!
This is a great day out guys and a real fun track to blast a coupe round!!!!!
to start the list off..
1. Marco20vt + BBQ + Mrs Marco20vt
2. Mario + BBQ
3. Lashes/Adam/pink boy + BBQ = Mrs Lashes
4.
Thanks

Is this near Brum? If so only a few hours away for me. Would be able to make the first two weekends of the month but working the second two.

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 28/03/2011 14:36
Will see what we can do Alan, we are waiting to hear back from the track owners.
Yes its the one near brum. A great little track to test your handling and would be a nice way of testing your current set ups for those going to spa in June.
This is a sprint track for those who have never been and it means there will be only one car on the track at any one time. It is in the middle of a field with very few places you will go off and hit something.

I'd look to come along if I'm not offshore. Anyone else stopping over locally - it's a bit of a treck for me to get there.

I am Coventry born and dragged up. Would also give me a chance of visiting family and friends so will be there if I can make it. Still not picked up my car as waiting for the DVLA to send me a V5 before I can tax her as she is sorn at moment. Odds are my mechanic will not have much chance to do much with her before this as she needs cambelt doing and maybe more so will be standard 20vt, but will still give her a go

OH YES!!
how much do you think it would be to see how fast people clock round the track!!
also, guys/girls/proccy
Who is up for a BBQ?
nothing posh (sorry proccy)
just disposal BBQ's and get burgers and stuff and get cooking at the track?
that way we can keep the fun going all day!!

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 28/03/2011 16:17
Marco - we're not allowed to conduct official timing, as that turns the event into a competition and it then falls foul of all sorts of rules. This is why Curborough won't allow use of their own timing equipment.
However, I don't see why a simple speed trap shouldn't be used to clock terminal speeds at the end of the straight

Point taken!
i did jsut mean a speed trap put in areas to see how fast people are coming into corners ect...
also be good to monitor you Nigel, as you lived at this track for 90% of your life!!
it would be good to see where we are losing speed/ going to slow ect
@ Nobby - God knows what Sir Barnacle would come up with!!!
but i think it would look like this!!
edit, just seen MattM is in on this... this is going to be a fun day

LOL!
I look away for 5 minutes, and this is the sort of thing that goes on!
I'm not sure I can make this date ... so I haven't committed yet. Also, I thought I'd give Coupes a chance to claim all the spots available ... and if there was still one free then I might take it in my Westie.
So I'm keeping my eye on this thread (not least, to see what T and Marco are saying about me
) and will let you know if I can make it

Will need a few tips as have never done a track day of any sort before
I drive so slow that I have never had any points on my licence
Just take your time, its a short track, you do two laps on your own with no other cars on there and then you come back in. Each time you go out you can put your foot down a bit more.
Last time was my first time... one bit of advice... when you approach the very first corner dont indicate left as you will never hear the end of it

Let me correct this for you...
when you approach the very first corner dont indicate left as you will never hear the end of it
Alan will never have it mentioned s i dont know him well enough to rip the pee out of him!!!
but tbh... it does not not matter... i would rip any one for laugh!!

I am not going to rip the pee. Looks as though there will be pics taken when I spin off. Fill your boots with me still though. Turning up in a porto
BTW do we need to wear helmets? Have not picked my coupe up yet, but from when I had one years ago I remember hardly having any headroom.

You do not require helmets for curborough
Its not competative

Ok - so really geared up for this!
Bought some very shite tyres as im skint!, Nankangs! That'll be some epic oversteer into hedges...
Also fitted a short shift so changes should be sweet..
Thought i'd bore you with that...

Chrissy, don't you mean epic understeer with those tyres?
I will be paying at the end of this month when I get paid. It's a busy week for me. I will be driving on track as a display driver for 'Dads day out' at Dunsfold on Saturday 14th, then at Curborough on the 17th then back to Dunsfold on the 21st. Poor Colin (the Caterham
) is going to take a bit of a hammering.

I have a mate who might be able to join me. Will not know til close to the date as it depends on how much work he has on. Would he have to book a place as if he did have a drive it would be in my car. I would love him to come and he is also my mechanic and could work on her during the day and get her running better. I have not picked my car up yet, but as soon as I do he has all the belts to change and maybe more to be ready for this

After over a year of trouble free motoring, I now have a list of things to do before going to this! Sods law,..
Turbo - DP gasket (performance SS) has blown
Intercooler needs changing as its not coping well in the heat & boosting @ 23psi
Front tyres are dead
Front brake pads are dead
Plugs are dead
Oils black
More I suspect, lots of service bits, But why 2 weeks before?

It's more than that - it's a superb way of REALLY stretching the legs of your car in a relatively safe environment. You'd have to be fairly loopy or unlucky to damage anything other than your pride (although there ARE things to hit, so it's not an excuse to leave your brain at home - I've seen a few cars get bent there over the years)
The circuit looks ridiculously easy, especially if you
look at it in Google Earth, but anyone that's driven it will tell you that it's fiendishly difficult to string together a decent lap (or two laps in our case)
There is a small number of spaces left and I strongly recommend that you get yourself along on Tuesday and have some fun.
Just to help persuade you, I'll be taking along a bullet camera which I'll happily fix to anyone's car that wants some footage of their exploits. The camera can be mounted on any smooth (and clean) surface, so I can get footage from inside or outside of the car and from some fairly novel angles if required (like down by the front wheel - makes for an interesting viewpoint)
See
The Peaks meet video for a couple of examples of camera angles - (check out the suspension movement at about 1m30s)
Last year, it lashed it down with rain all day, but it was still huge fun (in fact I reckon the slippy conditions made it even more enjoyable)
2009's weather was much kinder, with rather more grip and many less brollies
So, don't be a
- raid the piggy bank for £25, book a day's holiday (or a day's sickie
) and come to Curborough with 20+ other Coupe nutters and have a really great day out

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 12/05/2011 19:44
I'd forgotten about
this video from 2009 apologies for the shaky picture - it was pretty windy and I'd forgotten my tripod
Also
some in-car footage from 2009 This year (as with 2010) we'll start from the official startline
fast forward to 45 seconds - it was slippy.... listen out for the terminal understeer on the two hairpin bends Go on - you know you want to.....

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 12/05/2011 20:02
And just to make it slightly more attractive, I'll bring my code reader and do a code check for anyone that wants it - this can also include a check on components such as aircon solenoid, cam variator and (most importantly) throttle opening in degrees
I *might* also be able to reset airbag lights, although this tends to be a bit hit & miss

I'm Now a 50/50!!!
I badly want to come, just for the jokes!!!!
Loving the photos Nigel!! Lol
Oh and also, it was not just me who spun on the straight/ bend!!!!!
Didnt Antrax have Gaz coil overs/ arb/ team dynamic pro 1.2 wheels ect!!
I had buggered suspension, a flat tyre and good old fashion crap rear rubber to help me spin!!!
Posted By: sandytim
Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 12/05/2011 22:47
Never mind a code reader Nigel, what we realy need is your big yellow stop watch !
I'll see if I can dig out some walky talkies as it was tricky to get the right driver last time.
I second what Nigel says about relatively safe fun at Curborough.Last year was great fun dispite because of the HEAVY rain.
I've got some new rear tyres this time so I'm hoping to be pointing the right way more of the time.
Whats the plan for food? If we can get a bbq on the go I'm willing to donate some supplies of meat ,sauces ,buns etc.

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 12/05/2011 22:54

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 12/05/2011 23:05
The pub was very nice and would be less hassel (and possible dryer).
But if someones happy to supply a bbq then I have the meat (so to speak) !!

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 12/05/2011 23:06
Pub would be my preference, less faff really. Marco stop being such a
and get yourself down there, a good chance to show off your lovely 'new' Coupe if not your driving skills, heck I will even buy you a pint.

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 13/05/2011 08:11
Tim - I'm bringing a large timesheet, a stopwatch, some walkie-talkies and some binoculars - all designed to make the timekeeping a little easier.
We'll be having a slightly different system this year - people will be asked to complete their details on the timesheet as well as the signing-on / disclaimer form - that way, we'll know who is driving, as well as just the car details. The walkie-talkies will also help us when someone else is driving a car - there was quite a bit of car swapping last year and it was a nightmare trying to work out who it was.
@ Marco - you're going to kick yourself if you don't go (and we'll take the mickey for the next 12 months) Remember, I started my new job last week too, but I'll still be there, so you have no excuse....

Lads, I am shooting myself on this, I am a good driver I like to think but under pressure and having NEVER done a track day I am feeling the burn,
I am sure I will push too hard and come off, I hope not but with standard 70k suspension its almost certain,

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 13/05/2011 09:31
Chrissy - I'm happy to come out with you for a couple of sighting laps if you want me to - I can tell you the braking and turn-in points - I won't be asking you to push it - probably no more than 8/10, but it might give you a bit more confidence
You're also welcome to come out with me if you want to
The key is to start slowly - nobody will laugh at you for taking your time to familiarise yourself with the track - however, they WILL laugh at you if you spin it on your first lap by trying to be a hero.
You have nothing to prove, just turn up, have a laugh with some friends, expect a mickey-take for driving a Golf in drag and spend the day trying to (gradually) improve your technique and wear out your tyres

No problem - before you go out, I suggest you spend half an hour watching other people drive round to see their lines and braking point (and their mistakes).
We'll go out in your car first, so that I can suggest some lines and then we'll have a whizz round in mine

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 13/05/2011 14:47
Manually - the circuit rules forbid official timekeeping unless its a formally-sanctioned MSA event. We simply start a stopwatch as the starter's flag drops, and we stop it as the car crosses the line - there is obviously a degree of approximation involved, although I only accept that now - last year, when I won by 0.03 of a second, I maintained that the timekeeping system was perfectly accurate

All being well, my youngest son (Matthew) will take Samsite's place (assuming he's now not coming) - he'll be chucking his Mk1 Golf 1.3 around, probably making lots of squealy-tyre noises and a chucking out a bit of blue smoke (tired bores, we think)
We just need to get the split CV boot repaired on Saturday before we can confirm
Eldest son (Lee, of crashed 16v Coupe fame) will also be there, blagging loads of passenger rides....

Devastation on friday 13th!
My 'as new' tyres i just had delivered, Eagle F1's that I bought from a guy that said they were the wrong profile, and had covered less than 30 miles..
Had them fitted to my rims and theres a slight problem.... BOTH have severe slashes / tears in the side walls all the way through!
These I was depending on for tuesday -
Company that sold them is closed till monday so Il grill them then, In the mean time I have had to buy ANOTHER set, (Toyo Proxes) New and am praying! they get delivered by monday... The company say DHL will 95% get them here for monday, or possibly I can get to the Cardiff depot and they would be there if not delivered...
Failing that - I have no front wheels on my car!

225 40 18, @ Nigel - They are so much cheaper online, Im shelling out so much money at the moment and couldnt justify paying over the odds, I presumed local Toyo would never match £200 delivered for a pair, I expect im wrong though

Car stuck in Wales and more needed to be done when I get her home. Getting her here on the back of a transporter. Will make sure she is ready for next time.

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 17/05/2011 22:00
Isn't it amazing how such a simple little track can be SO entertaining?
My competitive nature means I'm a tiny bit miffed not to have posted the best time of the day, but after Fishy_Dave's first run, I knew I was doomed....
At the end of the day, whilst 138bhp isn't very much at all, when its shoving just 560kg around, its going to be stupidly quick. I was also watching Dave's braking points - for the big stop at the end of the straight into the second lap, he was hitting the brakes at the 50m board. Dave's cornering speed was also far higher than mine, yet another consequence of a car with such low inertia.
However, for me, the biggest drawback was the inability to drive like this:-
I was understeering like mad coming out of the top hairpin, but Dave was just being a drift-demon (possibly something to do with showing off to Marco's laydee?)
Great day
More photos to follow soon, but I've only just finished work for the night, so I'll probably do it sometime tomorrow

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 18/05/2011 09:04
Feeling better after a good bit of sleep.
What a great value day, would love to do this again. Thanks so much to Paul and others involved in organising this.
I had never been to Curborough before and was kicking myself I got there two hours late. Embarrasingly I couldn't get the trailer out the garage for over half an hour
, plus the VW does seem down on power on full throttle, down to 30mph on the steepest hills!. Before the event I did know that my car would be well suited to the circuit, being twisty with no long straights, but knew that Nigel and others had a good deal of experience.
Anyway, after a few jibes on arrival about only cars driven to the circuit were allowed
I unloaded the car and queued up. Thanks for those who let me push in for my first run. For some reason the idle speed was running at over 2000rpm, no idea why. First run surprised me in how slippery the surface was, or was it my old tyres? Plenty of twitchy sideways moments and difficulty in seeing the corner apex being so low down, great fun through, love the top corner.
Head scratching over the high idle problem and then the engine cut out and wouldn't restart. Flea to the rescue, quick tweek on the throttle stop and it cured the problem, thanks mate.
Last run before lunchtime left me a tenth of a second behind Nigel. After lunch Nigel seemed to retire to the timing shed, that is until I got in a quicker time in the 1.06s. Nigel again reduced his lap time to similar to my time which is remarkable considering the extra weight of the Coupe and goes to show how an experienced driver makes such a difference (that and a good few hundred BHP).
At this stage I thought I would sit back and see if Nigel could beat that time and gave a few passenger laps. Sorry to those who also asked for a lap that I couldn't fit in, I will happily take you out on another occasion. It was fun taking out Marcos girlfriend, although she was concerned at getting flies squished on her Guccis
. I was under instructions to get it sideways so gave it plenty of welly! Seemed to be enjoyed anyway.
Just in case I thought I should go out again to see if I could set a faster lap alone, the extra weight of a passenger both slows the car down and makes it more likely to understeer (not calling anyone fat btw
). Frustrated on a couple of runs by not being able to get 2nd gear and getting 4th instead, on my second to last run it came together and I dropped into the 1min 5sec area. Strange how that run felt slower than some others.
Thanks for being a great competitor Nigel, and such a shame your shoes didn't allow you to drive my car, I'd have liked you to experience it. Next time ok? Good to meet Theresa for the first time, and nice chatting to the guys with the Clio and Elise. Hope you got back safely Chrissy?
Will upload a video later. Cheers

Bloody cheek, as if I'd be SOOO out of shape! That could only be MattM
I was driving Custard, so 0/10 for observation Dave!
A very good day btw, and many thanks to all the organisers and everyone who pitched in to help make the day a success. Apart from the killed clutch, turbo, gearbox (I think that's it
)
And annoyed at losing out to Leighton by 0.03 of a second in my car.
Was the first time I've really pushed the old family bus, and the first time I've successfully completed a timed lap of Curborough after my spin in my 16vt last year resulting in ripping the tyre of the rim.

Not going to be as easy to get to, but how about trying
Blyton Park Looks like quite a good venue, run off like at Bedford and prices reasonable too. I feel like I've driven Bedford too many times now.
Alternatively, how about the new Snetterton 300 layout?
Both of the above should suit the Coops well.

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 18/05/2011 11:31
hmm, Blyton looks good dave!
loads of run off... and mainly no big thngs to hit when you do come off
i think at the moment Bedford will be a good shout seeing as its a track thats semi easy to learn and fun!
i havent looked at the new Snetteron 300 lay out... will do in a moment!
tell you what, IF we do bedford, i will sort out a table at a fine italian resturant near the track for a dinner date and time to watch the track footage ect!
goo on Dave, come to bedford!!! you know its the right thing to do

Blyton and Snetterton are MILES from me, which make a round trip in a day impossible. I did Snetterton on the first track day there since the new internal section, back in Feb. It's a cracking track. Just being in the sticks makes it a trek for most, especially us "Westsiders"

Yes, a long way for me too, just good to try new circuits. Could find a cheap B and B/Travelodge maybe?
Checked my time against the class 2 runners in the Caterham speed series. It would have made me third in 2009, about mid pack in 2010. Quite pleased with that knowing that the car is capable of faster times with a bit more practise on my part.
Just uploading a couple of clips to Youtube now.

Blow out Just as I was joining the M5 yesterday evening this happened! Heard a pop, but couldn't see or hear a problem. Car behind flashed it's lights so I pulled over to see a totally flat tyre! I'm just thankful that I don't tow at high speed and I that I bought a twin axle trailer. At least I had my jack and wheel gun, so I was on my way within 5 minutes.

The times for the Curborough Long Course - 1557 yards (0.88 miles). All cars are 20VT unless stated.
I know a couple of people were listed as sharing cars (Sandytim, MattM) - the time recording didn't record who was driving - just which car was circulating. If you know who else drove your car and which run it was, I'll create a new line for the second driver.

Re: Curborough track day *17th May* *TAKING PAYMENTS* - 18/05/2011 17:42
OK - time for some stats....
Note that I've removed the times where it was known that someone else was driving a car (ie all of Flea's laps and also Nick's lap in Mario's car) If anyone wants any more laps removing, just let me know.
First one is potentially the most interesting. This is a colour-map of each person's times, with red for the worst time, and green for the best, with varying shades inbetween. You can clearly see that most people (correctly) took it easy for the first run, then got better all day. A couple of people had a slow run in the middle, probably due to the rain shower just after lunch.
The second graphic is the variance between the best and worst times, shown as standard deviation - i.e. the best value is the lowest. Huge respect to PorkyPaul for such consistency - just 1.81 seconds between his best and worst times.
Next is the number of runs - MattM seems to take this crown, although I have a feeling that someone else was driving his car for a few of the laps.
And finally (unless I can think of some more!) - the total time on track
The final values are telling - if someone had approached you and said "do you want some time on track - £25 for 15 minutes?" - you would probably say 'no' thinking it was bad value (ie £100 per hour)
However, I defy anyone to say that yesterday wasn't a great day out for the money, even for those that travelled a long distance. The best value though has to go to my son, who had a brilliant day in his 60bhp Golf 1.3, all paid for by me (including his lunch!) That's what parents are for, I suppose....

Just spotted something else quite interesting - on the colour-map, look at Fishy_Dave's first five runs compared with my first five - apart from one blip (where I suspect Dave had a passenger) our times were VERY similar, even the degrees of improvement were very closely matched.
Perhaps if I'd done ten runs like Dave, instead of my measly five, I'd have caught up....

You have driven there before mind Nigel, it was my first time
I did notice that too, interesting stuff. I can recall that my first lap was quite an interesting experience, not totally sure what was around the next bend or how slippery things were.
Maybe if you hadn't had month old fuel as we mentioned, that must have lost an octane or two.
I'd have liked to have seen what times you could have set driving my car mate.

So a little bit of
video Very enjoyable day, thanks to Dan, Luke and Chrissy for letting me drive their cars... but Chrissy
Appreciation to all the people who help organise these events, always so nice to be a part of.
The racing at the sharp end was great. Matt, I really don't think you have found the limits of your Coupe
Ecrab, loving your comittment, made to be driven these cars with plenty more to come! He may be old(er), and he may be from Brum, but he sure knows how to hussle a 400bhp Coupe round a sprint course... awesome
Of course the Caterham wins the day (mapped by me don't you know
), if you haven't been out with Dave then sign up now as he's an exceptional driver (hooner when required too), especially on the bigger faster tracks!

Ahh but it does work for everyone else, the amount of rubber Matt deposits on the track, means everyone else gets better times

So, will we be doing another day at Curborough this year?
I hope so, but this time, I'll firm up the rear dampers AND I'll put some fresh fuel in.
I thought you were joking about high-octane fuel going off, but I've been doing some Googling and it seems you were spot on. It's called "olefinic breakdown". I learn something every day.
The fuel has been in my car for well over a month, and there's no way of knowing how long it would have been in the forecourt tanks (its a small, local station where I've never seen anyone buy V-Power, apart from a couple of passing bikers.
If we hold it late enough in the year, there's a chance it will be cold and damp, in which case, I expect to have my revenge against the Caterham....

I accept your challenge sir!
To be truthful, the Caterham is an evil little thing in the wet. I like a good drift like the next man, but on some surfces it's just downright awful, as witnessed by my wet race at Brands in 2009 where i was getting hassled by a Beetle (air cooled!), a Metro and a Fiesta!
Should be fun trying though. If it's dry again I do fancy my chances again now I've watched a few videos and understood the lines a bit better. I can see good chunks of time i can make up out of Paddock bend/entry to Woodside and also the line for Fradley. Less negative camber, better tyres and I'll be ready, bring it on
