New FC Hybrid Turbo - 372bhp & 329lbs/ft

I have to say I do love hybrid turbos, especially when they are this good smile Introducing the fastest spooling and most powerful hybrid combination to grace a Coupe 20vt... the FC PowerUltra+!

Of course it looks like a regular standard turbo, but that's the beauty of it. A direct fit with all original and uprated parts i.e. inductions, exhausts, manifolds, it could not be simpler. However, deep within a powerful beast lies waiting, one that has pushed the capabilities of the hybrid to it's ultimate form.

1.35bar
345bhp @ 6934rpm
291lbs/ft @ 4920rpm
288 wheel power @ 6737rpm

1.65bar
372bhp @ 6987rpm
329lbs/ft @ 5007rpm
312 wheel power @ 6871rpm

click to enlarge click to enlarge

The torque band is simply immense, with the turbo lighting up with just a whiff of throttle and 1.5bar seen at 3000rpm on the road! No surge just a wall of torque building and building, but it doesn't let up like most hybrids, no this one just digs the heels in and pulls hard all the way to 7000rpm.

Now then, you can't just bolt on any turbo and expect it to make max power without further modifications. You also can't run 1.65bar on a standard engine for too long no matter how well I tune it! No this particular turbo has been mated to a beautiful Chrono Grey LE owned by Shaky20vt with a new FC Performance engine and upgrade package, fully forged and ready to take on the full force of the PowerUltra+ smile

FC forged engined
Standard head
6 paddle clutch
FC Front mounted intercooler
FC 3" exhaust system
SIP + K&N filter
Walbro 225 fuel pump + direct battery feed
410cc injectors
NGK 7 spark plugs
Apexi AVC-R boost controller
FC Stage 4 remap

There's more too...

If I told you we actually made 390bhp from this turbo, well tis true!

click to enlarge click to enlarge

You only have to look at the boost chart to see this turbo in action, 1.6bar holding all the way to 7000rpm! While I knew we were going to be pushing the boundaries, I did not expect the 410cc injectors to reach max duty at 6k. So for now I have artificially reduced the boost via the Apexi in order to bring the fuel in line and 372bhp is where we are at. Shaky will be back though, and with it an upgrade to our Stage 4 Big MAF conversion cool

I dont understand the minimal power increase over normal stage three with the massive cost of a forged engine on top...wouldn't people just buy a normal hybrid? Or am I missing something confused

Re: New FC Hybrid Turbo - 372bhp & 329lbs/ft - 14/07/2013 20:54

You don't need a forged engine to benefit from the extra power, efficiency and spool of this turbo. A typical Stage 3 hybrid is good for 315-340bhp and also doesn't spool as quickly. Why limit yourself to a smaller turbo for spool when this turbo can do it all from 270bhp all the way to 390bhp!

Love your work Flea

I've been thinking over how to make a similar 16VT unit, but it would have to be a GT30 series, so maybe a little big. I do wonder how a GTX3067 or GT3071 .48 would go.

Sounds very interesting does this Leighton! Especially good for those replacing their turbo (usually after you've just bought a coupe!) as it's something that can sit and evolve with the car as it's developed and modded by the owner. Nice approach.

Looks rather interesting indeed!

More and more development work - always good to read new and exciting things for the Coupé.

Will you be updating your website with prices for your hybrid range and other uprated parts, as you had on here previously?

interesting topic this one going look into a turbo once my coupes got braking handling and and overall safety done!
sadly wont be this year!! Good work leighton hope to be in touch next year mate.

Re: New FC Hybrid Turbo - 372bhp & 329lbs/ft - 10/08/2013 20:27

I can honestly say that Leighton's work has given my Coupe a new lease of life - I just cannot stop putting my right foot down crazy .It just keeps pulling and pulling through all the gears, but I do have to stop myself as I know the injectors are on the limit.
This Turbo spools up so quickly, it's unbelievable - If you need a new upgrade then this Turbo is the way to go - But this is just my opinion. Thanks Leighton smile

Re: New FC Hybrid Turbo - 372bhp & 329lbs/ft - 11/08/2013 16:45

Thanks Shaky, it really is a beautiful setup. There is another Coupe about to roll off the line with a full FC engine rebuild and upgrade package like yours. It is fair to say there is no other turbo out there like this, it produces the widest torque curve ever seen, which means instant power that pulls hard without dropping off all the way to the redline. Coupled with an FC engine, this really is the evolution for the 2013 Coupe.

Re: New FC Hybrid Turbo - 372bhp & 329lbs/ft - 12/08/2013 16:35

sounds great fun....but, cost of a forged re-build is prohibitive to most c. £3k coupe owners - with your mapping and supporting external additions (presumably cooler, breathing and pump. possible injectors) how far would you comfortably take the mapping matched to this turbo for road use - where the time above 6k rpm in upper gears is absolutely minimal - given an average condition engine, good oil and fully warmed each time?
- would 350 bhp and say 320 lb ft be realistic? - Or are we still better off sticking with an earlier hybrid and 340bhp max - is the cost similar and the responsiveness so much better that it makes the new model simply the default choice? - what sort of cost for the unit?

What makes the new unit more responsive low down and able to flow hi boost through to 7k? - Unusual to 'have your cake, and eat it!'

Re: New FC Hybrid Turbo - 372bhp & 329lbs/ft - 17/08/2013 08:08

As I mentioned in an earlier post, you certainly don't need a forged engine to run this turbo, in much the same way you don't for a GT28RS. At modest boost levels it will flow very efficiently and be capable of 270-350bhp on a standard engine, but with a very broad powerband.

As for revs, the standard engine can also be taken to 7k if tuned correctly, but for most Coupes we would be seeing peak power around 6-6.5k, so just a little higher than standard.

It by no means makes other turbos redundant, but if you are modifying a car in stages then you can go with a single turbo rather than having to swap out for the next power increase. I have also introduced a little brother version to the FC lineup for even faster turbo spool, this will be our default choice for the 300 mark where turbo response is very key.

A little update on the new FC PowerUltra turbo. We have just completed a new forged engine rebuild (more on that later), but a couple of videos to show the blisteringly fast turbo spool from the PowerUltra!

1.45bar @ 2600rpm

Instant full boost @ 2700rpm

This must be [cloud9] quick fast spooling street turbo. Well done, Leighton!

I bet that it is ball bearing.

PS why only 1.45bar if the engine is forged?

No still journal bearing wink The new FC engine is being run in by myself, but once ready it will be going up to 1.7bar evil It is the same turbo as mentioned in the opening post, it certainly loves boost!

I'll send you a PM Davie as there are two variants.

Re: New FC Hybrid Turbo - 410bhp & 358lbs/ft - 28/09/2013 17:56

Well Shakil came back a couple of weeks ago for the new Vibra Technics engine mounts as the standard ones were shot with the new power. We also installed new injectors and the FC Big MAF conversion followed by the Stage4+ remap to allow full boost from the new PowerUltra+ turbo.

This is a first, over 400bhp from a hybrid turbo...

1.85bar - 1.75bar
410bhp @ 6607rpm
358lbs/ft @ 5209rpm
354 wheel power @ 6414rpm

Does this turbo still use the standard sized V band connection to the downpipe?

Yes this is a hybrid in the true meaning of the phrase, original exhaust and compressor housings. So yes it uses the original V-band mated to an FC 3" exhaust system.

What was your spec again technics
Posted By: technics

Re: New FC Hybrid Turbo - 410bhp & 358lbs/ft - 30/09/2013 19:16

gt3076 .64
83mm Accralite pistons
Cunninmgham rods
Full 3" stainless Longlife system
Aquamist 50/50 methanol/distilled water
Ported manifold
Evo FMIC
Apexi AVCR
FC Performance big MAF Conv
Some sort of bigger injectors but cant remember the size, Flea fitted them,
Then obviously all the brakes, suspension and an uprated clutch to cope.

Probably missed something out, any ideas though. I was expecting around 460-480 bhp.

I made 420 bhp and around 365lb ft

Cheers, just interested really if there was anything else I could of done or something was missing, still was a great car and a great drive but its quite a spec I thought.

Cheers.

Your car was setup really well Maurizio, very wide powerband and extremely drivable because of this. Your turbo wasn't a true GT3076 0.64 as it used a smaller turbine wheel for greater response, and this was demonstrated by the quick spool compared to a real GT30!

Now don't be trying to stir up something just for your own amusement Pero, the mods/admin will be watching. You know full well that both cars have been on the same dyno, with very similar specifications. The new turbo is exceptional, that is the nature of progress smile

Sorry flea, I meant to say it's because your dyno under-reads.

Technics, you should have put your car on the heartbreaker. It would have made way over 500hp. laugh

Re: New FC Hybrid Turbo - 410bhp & 358lbs/ft - 01/10/2013 18:24

Fair point Flea.

Pero, would of been interesting on the heartbreaker, did put it on there on my old RSR setup and it made 330bhp with a small boost leak, not sure if you ever knew that but wasnt too shabby.

Re: New FC Hybrid Turbo - 410bhp & 358lbs/ft - 02/10/2013 05:19

Yes you told me.

When I put my car on the heartbreaker with the old setup, it made a whopping 286bhp. Only 60hp down. tongue

Also, don't forget the ambient temp was extremely high on the dyno day- surely that had an effect.
