996 tiptronic. Should I be keeping up? - 12/11/2014 12:59

Assuming my gtec1 equipped 20vt is in fine fettle how close should I be to said 996 in terms of acceleration? (2002 3.4 I believe)

Rolling start at sub 85 probably quite close, over 100 not so much.

It was 2nd gear off an island (wet) with him behind.
Both had traction issues as I could see him squirming around in my mirror, but I gapped him in 2nd and then he closed me down surprisingly quickly in 3rd.
I did get a flash of injector light in 3rd though...

According to Parkers the 2002 tiptonic models have 320 bhp and 1550 kgs so that's 206 bhp per tonne. You will have around 240 bhp at best and 1310 kgs so that's 183 bhp per tonne. I'm not taking into account transmission losses here, which would be larger on the 911.

You'd need 270 bhp to match the power to weight ratio.

It's power band and delivery not peak power. Some modern cars gain 20 bhp on over boost for headline numbers but it's available for 500 rpm which is useless.

An NA with high power delivers later on than a turbo car hence you pull away and then get caught and passed. a 996 in the wet would be hard work, not surprised you stuck with it.

Sounds like I need a new turbo then! laugh

Re: 996 tiptronic. Should I be keeping up? - 12/11/2014 17:08

The original 911 996 3.4 was 296bhp and 1320kgs. It was up to 320bhp by 2002 I think (3.6).

Its transmission losses will be no worse than ours (essentially fwd, in reverse!) and it's more aerodynamic.

Even if it was the 3.4, what happened, should have happened!

So it sounds like I'm about 60 bhp short.
I'll start saving for that hybrid now then!

Rear wheel drive can get power down quicker (in the dry) but it would be more of a struggle in the wet...which could explain you gapping him in 2nd and him squirming around.

For some reason I was thinking it was the 4WD version?!

4wd 911 would butcher a stage 1 coupe in any situation.

Definitely yesterday as it was very wet.

Sorry, have I offended you with a fact?

I think the 996 would destroy any coupe unless it's 300 horses or more. They are usually over the quoted power figure

Agreed. smile

I don't agree Ive been to a few rolling road sessions were Porsches have been there aswell and they haven't made the factory power and this is normally on the NA's mostly.
The only 2 I've witnessed that made more power than factory claimed were a GT3 and a Turbo S both were un modded

Re: 996 tiptronic. Should I be keeping up? - 14/11/2014 11:46

We're talking about the 996 here so given that means the following permutations:
296bhp Carrera 4 1500kgs
296bhp Carrera 2 1400kgs
320bhp Carrera 4 1500kgs
320bhp Carrera 2 1400kgs

You wouldn't be far off I if you said the following;

A 280bhp 20v Turbo would match a 296bhp 996 Carrera 4 from a roll,
A 300bhp 20v Turbo would match a 296bhp Carrera 2 and a 320bhp Carrera 4 from a roll,
A 320bhp 20v Turbo would match a 320bhp Carrera 2 from a roll,
From a dig, any of the 996 911s would beat the 20v Turbo.

Bring back the coupe vs threads, they were always good fun.

Why not barnacle?
Were they a source of trouble?

I have comparisons with a few cars. laugh
Civic type R, 944 S2, Celica GT, Corsa VXR, 911, GTV V6......

Re: 996 tiptronic. Should I be keeping up? - 14/11/2014 18:47

We had a number of posts[1] from people admitting to breaking a number of rules of the road, including but not limited to racing on the public highway and speeding.

There were also a number of, shall we say, if not fictional then exaggerated posts on the subject.

The board at the time felt that such posts brought the forum into disrepute and did not fit the ethos that the owner's club wished to present, and changed the rules to forbid such posts. At the same time a section dedicated to such activities was removed; and users encouraged to restrict such activities to the track.

Authors of such posts can expect to see them disappear, and can find themselves banned if they continue.

Jimbo is just trying to wind me up!

It was said with my tongue placed in my cheek as this thread reminded me of the 3rd gear warp speed coupe vs threads of olde.

I knew that, Jimbo, but realised Daz hasn't been around long enough for the history!

Ok I'll avoid any of those posts then! laugh
My coupe is faster in 2nd than 3rd anyway.
