I have been on the rollers today, attempting to map my coupe. However, we have come accross an issue which no-one seems to know how to fix;

Here is the graph before doing anything to the car. As can be seen it is running rich and then gradually leaning out towards full RPM.

Here is the stage that we are up to now.

The problem the mapper is having is that no matter what he does in the software, it is not affecting the fuelling from 4300rpm onwards. Steve, from dyno demon, literally sat for hours trying every possible way of altering this part of the map and nothing worked.

The car is mapped on a unichip. Now, when we first started to map, the original unichip would not respond to any of the commands. No matter what data was input, it did not affect the map and came up with error messages saying something about unable to write. Steve and I came to the conclusion that the chip was corrupt, so he copied the map and installed a new unichip onto the ECU and began to map that.

Steve is going to call Dastek on monday to see if they know the issue, but does anyone on here have any experience with this?

Any input greatly recieved

Depending on where it was originally mapped, the map may have been locked out - PT do this with their maps.

Matty has loads of experience mapping the coupe with the Unichip. I could hazard a guess but you'd be better off speaking to him directly.

I don't think it could have been locked as he managed to alter the beginning of the map. Worth looking into though, cheers matt

Dumb questions
Fuel pump, filter, FPR and injectors are all 100% yes?

As far as i know. But if you look at the first graph before any mapping starts its running good fuelling high in rev range which suggests, to me anyway, that those parts are capable of supplying but aren't being controlled properly?

I can guarantee that the first fueling run is so rich because the ECU/battery has been disconnected and now it's learning and slowly leaning itself off.

Unichip'ing a Coupé does require a few tricks to get it working properly, you need to adjust a few parameters for starters. I take it it's the older model of Unichip?

PTS don't lock their Unichip maps so that can be ruled out thankfully. Just looking at your boost graph, your best original fueling run was at 1.7bar... that sucked up some of your excess fueling in the midrange but obviously you don't want to be running that. The most recent run there are no scales, is that an AFR and torque curve or boost curve? If it is boost then you are either peaking at 2bar!! or 1.5bar, if it's a torque curve it looks a little odd. How are you controlling the boost? The power is down by quite a lot given the amount of boost, running 236bhp @ wheels is only giving 275-285bhp. I assume the car is healthy?

Just a quick update till Matt can respond as I was with him for part of yesterday.

It was an older model Unichip but Dyno Demon swapped it out for a newer / latest model as it was thought to be corrupted.

Boost control is via an Apexi AVCR.

Hope this helps.

The second graph is boost and Afr with the boost peaking at 1.2 bar. It think it was acknowledged that the boost needed tweaking. Also the original graph worked out at 299bhp at the fly. Car is healthy as far as i know, only had this one a couple of months and bought it on the belief that it was a ok. Might do a compression test on monday, but oil pressure and temp's and all other signs are good. I'm considering getting rid of the unichip and putting g.tec 2 in for now and then try find some time to get down to flea. However, i'm back at dyno demon next saturday so hopefully he can sort it, if he can't i may get a g-tec 2 just in case.

Thought it might be worth mentioning that we did a fuel pressure test @3.2 bar. Suggesting fuel supply is good

Did a compression test this afternoon, results were good.

Cylinder 1 = 154psi
Cylinder 2 = 155psi
Cylinder 3 = 155psi
Cylinder 4 = 153psi
Cylinder 5 = 156psi

So fuelling and compression is good.
Is it possible a sensor could be faulty, such as MAF-would that cause fuelling issues?

Do you know the injector duty? If they are at 90%+ then you won't get any more out of them.

exhaust backpressure?

what downpipe / cat / system are you running?

Exhaust is a 3" downpipe, leading to a race cat, then standard size stainless through to the back.

What i'm getting a little confused by is that people are suggesting it could be the injectors maxing out. However, before any mapping began, it was running decent fuelling at red line, so surely injectors must be ok?

Still waiting to hear what Dastek have to say, im hoping they come up with a fix because i'm getting a little frustrated by it all.
Just want my car to work!

If you could get the car relayed to me with the AA or similar, I can have you fixed up within a day or so. Just means taking the train down to Bristol to pick up and driving home.

It's a shame really as your car was all set to be mapped by me but then it was cancelled and sold to you.

I'll tell you the reason why i took it to dyno demon to map.
Simply because he offered to do it for £100 inc all the rolling road time, and it is considerably closer than Bristol.
Now, I am not doubting Steve's abilities at all because he has a very impressive resume, i think the problem is the unichip.
I'm going to wait and see what Steve comes up with from Dastek, if they have no ideas i will be in touch with you Flea, and we'll get rid of that sodding unichip!
Thanks for all the advice anyway guys

£100... well that is a very keen "credit crunch" price!!

Ooh just had an email from dyno demon;

"Hi Matt

Just had an answer!!! The fiat coupe needs another resistor to improve fueling at the top end of the rev range, then the thing should map properly.

I hope!!

I’ve ordered the resistor which should be here Thurs, once its here I’ll give you a call to make arrangements.

Regards,

Steve Walmsley

Director

Dyno Demon Limited"

Ah ha, hopefully this is a solution.
We shall see!

Have you asked Matty as he is really in the best position to advise on a Unichip. Never heard of a resistor aiding the Coupe, I wonder what type of resistor he is talking about, something to fool the MAF like on ebay?

I don't know, but thats from a guy at Dastek who Matty advised we talked to, as he has mapped a few coupes before.
We can give it a go, if it works thats great, if not, you'll be getting a call Leighton!

It's something to do with how the unichip alters the MAF signal I believe. Not aware of this extra resistor setup myself although if that's what Gerry says to do then that's what I'd be inclined to believe....

Interesting....Gerry does know his stuff when it comes to the Unichip.

But I don't have a resister and I've got full control. ;\)

I thought it was a gtec1 that was in now Tom?
On the spec sheet i have, it says its a unichip mapped over a gtec 1?
