Without seeing it close up and having a thorough check, I'd hazard a guess that it's (a) a trade-in and they just want their money back and (b) they've taken a value from Parkers/Glasses and punted it at that?
If I were in the market I'd certainly take a look, but with a copy of the buyer's guide from here under my arm, and preferably with a local who knows their stuff along for the ride.
Very occasionally these do turn up extremely cheap, so don't write it off just yet, but just be very very cautious and wary when you view and don't let Shiny Car Syndrome affect your judgement! You might even be able to persuade Nigel to take a look - he's not a million miles away.

Who is Nigel and how would I go about persuading him to have a quick look?

not far off £1700 at PowerItalia! The big jobs are 400-600 each, wishbones, couple of hundred. http://www.poweritalia.co.uk and look at the servicing page If it needs all of that, best to buy a car that has been maintained and had the jobs. Check the for sale section

Just been to see it and it's cheap for a reason, bodywork is v-bad, electric mirrors were broken, looked like it had had a rear shunt as is poorly repaired. All 4 wheels are bubbling and flaking very badly. Opened the bonnet after a test drive and smoke was coming out, smelt like burnt oil. Oh and the brakes hardly worked.

Not such a bargain after all then.. Thing is people see coupe's that are cheap like that then they think all coupe's should be that cheap.
